Inter-Deanery Transfers for Foundation Training (IDTFT)

Foundation training doctors who have special requirements for transferring to a different Deanery once accepted for foundation training should raise these with their Foundation Training Programme Director (FTPD).  Transfers will normally take place either at the start of foundation training (F1) or at the start of the F2 year.

Arrangements for Inter-Deanery Transfers for Foundation Training (IDTFT) must be agreed between Postgraduate Deans on the basis of individual trainee requirements if there has been an exceptional change in circumstance and there are well-founded needs in relation to:

  • Significant disability or ill health
  • Caring for ill/disabled partner, first-degree relative or other dependent
  • Personally providing care for young children

The following are NOT considered to represent acceptable criteria for inter-deanery transfer:

  • Being the spouse or partner of another medical student/foundation trainee
  • Sporting or social commitments
  • Financial considerations including housing

If the above criteria are fulfilled such transfers will take place only if:

  • there are places available in the receiving Foundation School/Deanery
  • the applicant has jointly satisfied both Deaneries that there are well-founded reasons for doing so.
