GMC Registration

For further information about the GMC and registering with them please refer to the GMS website www.gmc-uk.org

Provisional Registration with the GMC

By law, new UK medical graduates must be provisionally registered with the GMC before they can begin general clinical training (this is the final year of basic medical education).  You must obtain provisional registration before you commence your F1 post.  If you are a UK medical school graduate, the GMC will contact you via your medical school.

Full Registration with the GMC

UK Oxford graduates will need to:

1.  complete an online GMC application form at the GMC website.

2.  print off a Certificate of Experience from the GMC website, complete the information required and send to the Oxford Foundation School Manager at the address on the contact us page before 9 July.  The Oxford Foundation School will forward the completed certificates to the GMC on receipt of the completed 5.1 Attainment of Competency form (see 3).  For trainees within the Oxford Foundation School, your Postgraduate Centre Foundation Coordinator may be willing to forward these on to the Deanery on your behalf.

3. send the completed and signed 5.1 Attainment of F1 Competency form (in the Foundation Portfolio) to the Oxford Foundation School Manager before 9 July.  For trainees within the Oxford Foundation School, the local Postgraduate Centre Foundation Coordinator may arrange for these to be sent to the Foundation School Manager.  If you would like to have the original form back, then you should enclose a stamped-addressed envelope.  You may want the original form for future interviews, etc.

4. make payment to the GMC using the GMC online facility.

UK gradautes from other medical schools training within the Oxford Foundation School  will need to:

1.  complete an online GMC application form at the GMC website.

2.  print off from the GMC website a Certificate of Experience and send to your medical school or to the associated foundation school contact.  Please refer to your medical school for further information.

3. send the completed and signed 5.1 Attainment of F1 Competency form (in the Foundation Portfolio) to both the Oxford Foundation School Manager and to your medical school registration contact (send original copy to your medical school and a copy to the Oxford Foundation School).   Local postgraduate centre foundation coordinators may arrange for these to be sent to the Oxford Foundation School Manager, but it is the responsibility of the trainee to make sure a copy reaches their medical school contact.

4. make payment to the GMC using the GMC on line facility.

Non-UK Graduates training within the Oxford Foundation School: Graduates from non-UK Medical Schools should consult the GMC website for guidance on the procedure that they should follow.  The Oxford Foundation School will require a copy of the completed Attainment of F1 Competency Form and you should send the completed form to the Foundation School Manager. Local Foundation Programme Co-ordinators may be willing to arrange for this to be forwarded to the Foundation School.

Trainees can check that their Registration has been granted by searching the GMC Register on www.gmc-uk.org. Please note that it takes at least 5 working days from the day the GMC receive an application to process it and so it is unlikely that Registration will be processed before mid-July.

It is the responsibility of all trainees to ensure that they have acquired Full Registration with the GMC before commencing their F2 programme. Any trainee who is concerned that they will not be able to obtain Full Registration before their programme commences should contact both the Foundation School and the Trust in which they are scheduled to complete their F2 programme.
