What is Modernising Medical Careers?

MMC is a project for the reform of postgraduate medical training in the United Kingdom.
Since 2005, all graduates leaving medical school have entered a two year Foundation Programme, focused on developing key competencies. The purpose is to ensure that all doctors develop the core clinical skills required to identify and look after the acutely ill patient, as well as developing their communication, teamworking and IT skills.

From August 2007 doctors will then progress into Specialist Training programmes (also call run-through grades) that replace SHO and SpR grades. These programmes are based on demonstrating competencies, as a principle behind career progression rather than serving time.

Please refer to the MMC website for further information on how MMC works.
