The training programme in general surgery lasts for 6 years. Trainees rotate through the various posts on the programme at yearly (or occasionally 6-monthly) intervals. One year is an optional year which allows the opportunity for undertaking research or obtaining other types of specialist experience. Most registrars will nominate a subspecialty interest and the last two years of training are normally spent working in this specialty. The trainee's performance and log book are reviewed at annual RITA assessments. Subject to satisfactory RITA assessments the InterCollegiate Examination in General Surgery can be taken at any time after year 4. When this exam has been passed the trainee becomes a full Fellow of the relevant Surgical College and the Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training is then awarded at the end of the sixth year of training.
