5 year higher medical training (HMT) programme leading to CCST Requirement to obtain MRCPath during training
The first two years will be directed towards acquiring a broad general experience in Haematology under supervision, with both formal and informal teaching. During the three subsequent years the trainee will acquire a greater independence in clinical and laboratory practice. There should be some scope for pursuing sub-specialisation within Haematology. Experience in research is strongly encouraged and very close links with renowned MRC, LRF, Wellcome and NBS funded groups exists, allowing research opportunities leading to higher degrees. One year of research may count towards HMT.
During the five years, a period of time will be spent in a District General Hospital (Aylesbury, Milton Keynes, Wycombe, Slough). This will vary and should be at least six months but would not normally exceed two years.
The Oxford Haematology training programme is currently made up of 7 trainees and is therefore relatively small. The advantage of this is a close and rewarding relationship with enthusiastic and dynamic trainers. The added advantage of the programme is that most of the specialist haematology including paediatric haematology, BMT, coagulation and blood Transfusion essentially on one site. A new state of the art Oxford Cancer Centre is due to open in 2007, which Clinical haematology will move into.
