Welcome to the Oxford Deanery website.

The Oxford Deanery is the name given to the geographical area of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire for the purposes of postgraduate medical and dental education. The term Deanery is used because the Head of the Department of Postgraduate Medical & Dental Education is known as the Postgraduate Dean.

The Deanery is a department of the University of Oxford but works entirely within the Health Service. It is jointly funded by the University and the NHS.

Under the re-organisation that took place in April 2002 Oxford PGMDE works very closely with the Thames Valley Strategic Health Authority.

The main purpose of Oxford PGMDE is to develop, maintain and, wherever possible, enhance high quality education and training of doctors and dentists throughout the Oxford Deanery, enabling them to provide the highest quality of patient care.

Our vision is to develop the individual by complementing high quality clinical capabilities with good medical practice. This is to be facilitated through the quality and effectiveness of educators and as a result of working within an environment supportive of learning.
