Oxford and its surrounding towns and villages have always been a popular place in which to train as a general practitioner. There is a wide choice of cultural and educational opportunities in the city. In addition to a three year vocational training scheme the Oxford district has a large number of training practices who take registrars who have completed the hospital component of their training elsewhere. This may include those wishing to train on a part-time basis or who need shorter periods of train-ing after time out from medical practice. This has the advantage of providing a mix of doctors who can bring a wide range of experience to the final year of training. Exchange of ideas, values and attitudes within this peer group is an important part of the registrar year in Oxford.
