What length of scheme?

  • If you are starting out on your GP career, by far the easiest route is to apply for a full three-year scheme.
  • If you have some previous hospital experience you need to determine if it will be accredited towards your overall GP training - you can see the types of experience required on the PMETB website. If the post was an educationally approved post, you must obtain a signed VTR2 form endorsed by the Director of Postgraduate General Practice Education to show the post is recognised for general practice training. Otherwise you should check with the RCGP, who will give you a formal ruling as to how much further training you require. You will then be able to apply for an appropriate shorter scheme, whether 30, 24 or 18 months.
  • If you have already completed the hospital component of your training you need to apply for a one-year GP registrar post to complete your GP training.
