Announcement.
Senior Registrar
Scheme 2008.
The
Senior Registrar Scheme will continue.
The
scheme will have a different flavour to that of 2007 in that the posts will not
necessarily be in training practices and priority will be given to placements
in under doctored / under privileged areas within the Deanery. There will be 6 places across the Deanery. People from VTS in Oxford Deanery will be
encouraged to submit applications to work in their local area and beyond. Knowledge of the health need and health
service priorities will be key to project planning, clinical and leadership
skills will be key to its delivery.
The
interviews will take place in June 2008. Dates will be posted on the website as soon as
they are confirmed. A written agreement from
host PCT/Senior Team and project plan linked to local priorities will be
required prior to interview. Shared
funding will need to be explored however posts are not dependent on securing
funding from PCT or Trust.
The
projects will need to focus on specific local needs and national
direction. These can be identified by
accessing the Strategic Health Authoritys website, the PCT Public Health
Reports, Operational Plans and the Local Area Agreements. The Chief Executives, PEC Chairs, Directors
of Commissioning will be asked to endorse the SR Project and the SR will
therefore have access to top leadership support and be party to strategic
decision making in Primary Care.
The
projects will need to contribute to the individuals personal development as
detailed in a Personal Development Plan and the local service development. The success measures will be project reports
and the links to PCT Vital Signs and redesign plans.
It
is not expected that the projects will deliver huge changes in provision of
care within the six month timeframe, rather the project plans need to identify
how the work will be taken forward within the organisation. (Linking to a PCT
priority or clinical networks will make this possible as there will be ongoing
activity). Two Senior Registrars from the 2007 cohort
have continued in clinical leadership roles linked to SR projects with Trusts,
the scheme can therefore be an excellent launch into practice.
The
posts will be in place from August 08 February 09 with some flexibility if
needed. The funding will be from the
Deanery and therefore require that applicants remain a Registrar for the employed
period. It is therefore imperative that
applicants do not apply for their CCT. Pay
and conditions will therefore be the same as ST3 year. A learning set will support your personal
development.
The
majority of Senior Registrars have gone on to leadership or
specialist roles following the scheme. A
9 year review has shown that the leadership skills are sustained and further
developed and the contacts made during the project time are used to forward
career opportunities. The skills gained
within the Senior Registrar Scheme have prepared the GPs to
undertake leadership roles including extended roles in Practices, PCTS and
Public Health. The Scheme is therefore
an excellent opportunity to add value to GP training programmes, create GP
clinical leaders for the future, create local clinical leaders and promote
collaboration between practices, PCT and Acute Trusts.
If
you have any queries the scheme, please contact Marion Lynch Senior Registrar Programme Director, mlynch@oxford-pgmde.co.uk. If you wish to access the documents mentioned
please go to PCT websites or contact your local organisations.
