- Make sure you are on your PCT's Primary Care Performers List. The practice manager can help you with this.
- Update your Medical indemnity to GP status. Again, talk to your practice manager. Be prepared to pay for the subscription yourself initially, though it will be reimbursed.
- Check your Contract. Look at the sample registrar's contract on the BMA web site; make sure your practice roughly follows this. Your contract is with your practice, not the Deanery.
- Make preliminary approaches to the RCGP to check their regulations and timing about getting previous posts approved. You will need to register with the College too, in order to have your GP training certified, and you can do this at the start of your GPR training.
- Near the end of your training you will need to apply to the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PMETB) for a Certificate of Completion of Training (you can obtain a PMETB application form from the RGCP). However, the RCGP gathers VTR1 and VTR2 documentation for this on PMETB's behalf and you will need to also have registered with the RCGP. This new arrangement started on 30 September 2005. In the past some registrars have left applying for certification too late, and have been unable to start working following their registrar year until they were cleared. If you have had career breaks and/or worked part-time, you could find that previous posts 'fall off' the allowed retrospective time limit, so check early.
- Get familiar with the requirements of Summative Assessment - the assessment of minimum competence that you must fulfil by the end of the year. The National Office of Summative Assessment has the details. You will be sent a Deanery Welcome Pack at the start of your GP training year which also contains this information together with your personal Summative Assessment training number.
