Sitting the MRCGP

The current MRCGP examination will be phased out by 2008, along with Summative Assessment. These two will be replaced by the nMRCGP (new MRCGP). Click here for details of how candidates will be assessed for the new qualification and for the timetable.

The arrangements below are for the exam for RCGP membership as it stands, until 2008.

The exam is a credit accumulation examination. The main features of this are:

  • you must pass all four modules in order to pass the examination overall
  • the modules may be taken at the same session or at different sessions, in any order
  • you may have up to two further attempts at each module (a fee is payable in each instance)
  • all modules must be passed within three years of acceptance of your application, otherwise you must retake the entire examination.

Currently the four modules of the examination are:

  • a written paper (click here for link to RCGP site and sample papers)
  • a multiple choice paper (MCQ)
  • an assessment of consulting skills - either by video or by simulated surgery
  • an oral examination.

Each is available twice a year, in the summer and the winter. Click for 2006/07 dates.

The content of the examination tests the full range of activities in general medical practice, including those areas which overlap with other disciplines and professions. It is not just a test of clinical knowledge or diagnostic skills: it also includes an assessment of candidates' abilities in consulting and communications skills, practice management and attitudes in areas such as medical ethics.

You must also provide evidence of proficiency in basic cardio‑pulmonary resuscitation.

Further information

For further information on the examination, including advice on preparation, eligibility, and how to submit an application, visit the RCGP web site. The College has also published a book to help candidates with the examination called The MRCGP Examination - A Guide for Candidates and Teachers, available from sales@rcgp.org.uk.
