Prompt certification

Registrars intending to begin work straight after training should understand the following:

  • You cannot begin work in any capacity as a general practitioner until you have received your certificate - from 30 September 2005 the Certificate of Completion of Training issued by PMETB.
  • On a number of occasions certificates have been delayed, and those registrars were unable to begin work at the time promised to their employers.

To avoid any delays in certification the Oxford Deanery strongly recommends that:

  • You get your video and written submissions in to the Deanery offices no later than three months before the completion date of your GP training. This will ensure plenty of time for you to receive confirmation of completion of these components, or, if you do encounter any problems, time for these to be rectified.
  • You get your Structured Trainers Report and VTR1 signed by your trainer at the beginning of (but no sooner than) the last month of your training. You should then send these straight to the Deanery, to ensure the DPGPE, Dr Simon Plint, can sign these and return your VTR1 to you as soon as possible for forwarding to the RCGP.
  • If, at the start of your registrar year, you still hold unsigned VTR2's, you should make it an urgent priority to have them all signed by the consultant that supervised your training in these hospital posts, stamped by the hospital, and countersigned by the DPGPE, or nominated deputy, residing in the deanery belonging to that area. For example, if a hospital post was in an Essex hospital, the DPGPE who must countersign this will reside in the Eastern Deanery.

We also strongly urge you to let your future employer know you will not be able to begin work until you have received this certificate and if possible could they be flexible about the time at which you start.
