Inter-deanery transfers

The formal advice to GP registrars/GP VTS SHOs from the National Recruitment Office, approved by COGPED is:

If you wish to be considered for an Inter-deanery transfer you should:

 Ask your own Postgraduate Deanery for a copy of the COGPED guidance document on “Movement of GPRs/GP VTS SHOs between Deaneries, and Inter-Deanery transfers of GPRs/GP VTS SHOs” or download from www.gprecruitment.org.uk .

 Approach your own Director of Postgraduate General Practice Education (DPGPE) to explain why you are seeking an Inter-Deanery transfer.  If doing this for personal reasons, you should be able to show a change in your personal circumstances which accounts for this request.  You will be required  to provide independent, verifiable, documentary evidence to support your claim of a change of circumstances. You will need the agreement of your current DPGPE to initiate the process.

 You should begin this process as soon as possible at least 3 months before the proposed transfer date.  Please note that you should normally have been in post for 12 months before applying for an inter-deanery transfer.

 Complete an application form (also available from www.gprecruitment.org.uk) requesting an Inter-Deanery Transfer and submit it to your current DPGPE.  If you are claiming educational grounds, the support of your Associate DPGPE and Course Organiser will be expected. You and your DPGPE may then contact the DPGPE in the Deanery in which you are seeking a transfer to determine availability of a suitable post.

 Your Trainer/Educational Supervisor will also be asked to complete a structured assessment to enable an educational plan to be drawn up for further training.  This can also be downloaded from www.gprecruitment.org.uk and should be attached to your application.

 You should note that you will be subsequently be contacted by that DPGPE or his/her representative in order to discuss the process further.  You will probably be invited to a “getting to know you” interview in the “receiving” Deanery, but this will not be competitive.  Please note that approval of an inter-deanery transfer request does not guarantee a placement in the proposed deanery.  This will depend upon the availability of an appropriate vacant post.
