A new CO needs decent IT skills, especially email, as virtually all our work is now electronically based. A knowledge of group handling skills is vital: how to run a group, problems with groups, organisation of groups etc.
Thirdly, a CO should become familiar with the information needed to provide career counselling to junior doctors. This was something I just picked up as I went along.
Fourthly, you need to know where to turn for help if there are any problems, and use the Associate Directors as a resource.
Lastly, communicate with the rest of your admin staff regularly.
