The CO role has many aspects and while this set of documents and links can't pretend to be comprehensive, it aims to give help or guidance for the key CO activities in facilitating vocational training.

The course organiser role

In summary, the CO role is to ensure effective education for trainee GPs by the delivery of Vocational Day Release in their district for GPRs, and to influence standards of appropriate education for trainees while in their hospital and general practice posts.

COs report to their district Associate Adviser and thus to the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education.

Professional development

Membership of a professional body, either ACO or NAPCE is allowed from the VTS budget.

 

An Oxford Deanery CO comments:

‘A new CO needs decent IT skills, especially email, as virtually all our work is now electronically based. A knowledge of group handling skills is vital: how to run a group, problems with groups, organisation of groups etc.

Thirdly, a CO should become familiar with the information needed to provide career counselling to junior doctors. This was something I just picked up as I went along.

Fourthly, you need to know where to turn for help if there are any problems, and use the Associate Directors as a resource.

Lastly, communicate with the rest of your admin staff regularly.’
