GP appraisals

All general practitioners must now be appraised by trained appraisers.

The outcome of each appraisal will be a personal development plan (PDP). This is a confidential, educational process that is designed to enable individual doctors identify their learning needs, satisfy themselves of their competence and make a plan to maintain and develop their skills.

Thanks also to Reading, Newbury and Wokingham PCTs and the Oxfordshire PCTs for sharing their Berkshire Appraisers' Toolkit and Oxfordshire Appraisers Toolkit, which the Oxford Deanery recommends to appraisers and those being appraised.

PCT and Deanery roles:

  • The responsibility for ensuring that appraisals take place rests with the PCT, which also appoints appraisers.
  • Quality control, training of appraisers (after appointment by a PCT) and support of the process, rests with Deaneries. Although the information discussed within the process is confidential it is important that:
    • PCTs are given information from PDPs to underpin the educational plans that they make
    • PCTs should have a signed statement from each appraiser and appraisee when an appraisal has been completed satisfactorily
    • The GMC may wish to have similar information as part of the revalidation process.

Becoming an appraiser
If you have 3 years in general practice as a non-principal or principal and feel that you have the time and commitment, please contact your PCT for more on the local selection process.

One GP's appraisal experience
'It was the first time in my career that anybody has sat down with me and looked at where I am going and what I want to do with my career. I have decided to continue as a GP as my appraisal made me realise that I love my job, but I do now see that I can do something about the parts of the job I love to hate.'  A GP (Focus group)
